A church can be very good at getting things done. The newsletter goes out. The bills are paid. The calendar is maintained. Worship volunteers receive their reminders. The building is unlocked, cleaned, repaired, and used. The same dependable people keep showing up, carrying what needs to be carried, answering the questions that need answers, filling

In many churches, accountability is avoided for reasons that sound caring. People do not want to embarrass anyone. They do not want a pastor or volunteer to feel questioned in public. They do not want a meeting to become tense when everyone is already tired. Most of the time, the instinct is care. Churches value

There are meetings where everyone speaks, and still the room never really listens. The words move quickly enough. Reports are given. Motions are made. Concerns are named carefully, sometimes so carefully that no one can tell whether a real concern has actually been named. Someone asks a question that is carrying more resistance than curiosity.

A church can pray before every meeting and still organize the meeting in ways that make listening difficult. The prayer may be sincere. The people may care deeply. The leaders may want to be faithful. Yet by the time the agenda begins, the room may already know what is expected of it. Reports will be

There is a moment in some church meetings when the room seems to loosen. No one has solved the problem yet. The budget is still tight. The conflict has not disappeared. The staff are still tired. The building still needs attention. The congregation is still carrying grief, hope, history, preference, and fatigue into the room.

Churches have become efficient at making decisions. They approve budgets, adjust programs, revise policies, authorize repairs, evaluate staffing, adopt strategic plans, and respond to the steady stream of institutional needs that arrive before every governing body. Much of this work is necessary. Some of it is faithful. A church cannot live responsibly without making decisions.
