HOW TRAINING WORKS
A Learning Experience for Your Leadership Team
Church Training Center’s governance training is arranged for your organization’s leadership team. Rather than enrolling individuals in a public cohort, we bring the learning experience to the people who share responsibility for governing your ministry.
01
Choose Your Training
Select the 3.5-hour orientation, comprehensive nine-week program, or five-week Foundations program according to your team’s learning needs and availability.
02
Confirm the Arrangements
We establish the schedule, meeting format, participating team, and learning-material arrangements before the engagement begins.
03
Learn Together
The orientation introduces governing responsibilities. The multiweek programs use readings from Embracing Our Call, guided dialogue, and reflection to develop shared understanding.
Your Team's Participation
Meaningful training depends on the willingness of participants to learn together.
Shared participation
Invite the people who carry governing responsibilities to participate in the learning.
Preparation
For multiweek programs, allow time for assigned reading and reflection between sessions.
Open dialogue
Bring questions, different perspectives, and the willingness to consider what your team is learning.
Learning remains the purpose.
These programs provide education and shared understanding. Your organization’s governing body retains responsibility for its decisions and the application of what participants learn.
FROM LEARNING TO PRACTICE
Knowing Governance Is Not the Same as Practicing It
Training is a valuable beginning. It gives leaders the knowledge and understanding they need. But understanding governance and exercising responsible leadership are different experiences.
“The mind, having learned, thinks it knows.”
— Keith Clark-Hoyos
The difference becomes clear when leaders encounter real decisions, competing responsibilities, disagreement, and setbacks. Experience reveals what knowledge alone cannot—and often shows us what we still need to learn.
UNDERSTANDING
Training
Training develops knowledge of governing roles, responsibilities, principles, and practices. Leaders learn together and establish a shared foundation for their work.
Learning what responsible governance requires.
APPLICATION
Formation
Formation develops practice. Leaders apply what they know to their organization’s circumstances, work through challenges, reflect on experience, and develop governing habits.
Learning through the practice of leadership.
Continue the Journey Through Formation
Church Training Center’s Leadership Formation Retreats provide opportunities for governing teams to move from understanding into practice. Training can prepare the way, but neither service is a required prerequisite for the other.
